PETS TO PATRIOTS PROGRAM A SUCCESS!!

This kinda goes against what the "activists" have to say about Devore not cooperating. This program is sponsored by the Los Angeles Animals Alliance, Heigi Foundation, and AARF.

Pets to Patriots is a Los Angeles Animal Alliance program supported by a donation from the Jason Debus Heigi Foundation. The program operates at selected shelters throughout Southern California, and provides a portion of the funding required to pay for each pet adoption to a qualified veteran. The remaining fees were donated by the county’s Animals aRe First Fund (ARFF), a charitable organization that uses 100 percent of its funding to assist animals in need in San Bernardino County.

A total of 88 pets, nine cats and 79 dogs, were placed with qualifying veterans at no cost during this event.

“I would like to thank the Los Angeles Animal Alliance, Jason Debus Heigi Foundation and ARFF for this opportunity to match pets that need homes with deserving military veterans,” said Brian Cronin, Animal Care and Control Director. “By matching pets in need with veterans, we are able to honor those who have bravely served our country.”

And we thank Brian Cronin and the employees of SBACC for making this a success.

CAN ANYONE SPELL HYPOCRITE?

Let's take a look at the hypocritical list that has been posted recently.

1) Adopt- an obvious one, but not everyone can do (WAIT, ACCORDINGLY TO THE MOVEMENT THAT THE ACTIVISTS FOLLOW, THERE ARE PLENTY OF HOMES SO WHY CAN'T EVERYONE DO IT?)

2) Foster- I can hook you up with several amazing rescues that will provide everything, if you can provide the animal love and TLC (MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE FOSTERING FOR THE RIGHT REASONS, NOT JUST SUBSTITUTING ONE KENNEL FOR ANOTHER. FOSTERING IS TO HELP DEVELOP SKILLS FOR ADOPTION, TO HELP RECOVERY FROM SURGERY, NOT TO JUST KEEP THEM ALIVE WHICH IS WHAT MANY OF THESE RESCUES DO.)

3) Donate money to a rescue that saves pets from Devore (we can suggest a few reputable ones! (YES, COLLECTING DONATIONS DOES SEEM TO BE A PRIORITY DOESN'T IT?)

4) Talk to you friends and family about considering adoption and fostering- saves lives! (EVEN I CAN'T ARGUE WITH THIS ONE.)

5) Email, mail, and, call in to the local newspaper groups and TV groups- expose (in a polite, professional way) the horrors these animals face while in a shelter like Devore and how others can help (SO NOW THEY DESTROY ANY GOOD BY CONDEMNING THE SHELTER TO THE PUBLIC, PUSHING AWAY THOSE ADOPTERS. CAN YOU SEE HOW HYPOCRITICAL THIS IS?)

6) Place ads in the newspaper with info on a dog or two (or three) OR cat(s) that need adopted from Devore- you can see who's available on the San Bernadino County site under shelters and then choose "Devore" and search (NOTHING ABOUT COORDINATION WITH THE SHELTER ON THIS. ADVERTISE AND THE ANIMAL IS ALREADY GONE. BUT I SEE THE SCHEME BEHIND THIS IN THAT THEY WANT YOU TO FAIL SO YOU WILL COMPLAIN ALONG WITH THEM. BY THE TIME YOUR AD COMES OUT THE ANIMAL MAY HAVE BEEN EUTHANIZED OR ADOPTED. SO THIS MAKES NO SENSE WITHOUT INCLUDING COOPERATION WITH THE SHELTER.)

7) Go to Devore and take photos of the dogs- post the albums and info on our page and petfinder, and we can spread them like wildfire (AGAIN SETTING YOU FOR FAILURE AND IT IS DELIBERATE, THEY WANT YOU TO BE ANGRY. YOU HAVE TO COORDINATE WITH THE SHELTER, YOU CAN'T JUST TAKE A PICTURE OF ANY OLD PET THERE, PETS ARE CONSIDERED OWNED UNTIL THE END OF THEIR HOLD TIME. YOU CANNOT BE POSTING PICTURES ALL OVER THE PLACE OF SOMEONE ELSE'S PET.)

8) Talk to your neighbors, family and friends about spaying/neutering their own pets- give the facts and be calm and friendly about it (AND MAKE SURE YOU DO THE SAME FOR YOUR PETS!) SPAY AND NEUTER SAVES LIVES. (YOU WON'T GET AN ARGUMENT ON THAT FROM ME. HOWEVER, IF THE ACTIVISTS WOULD CONCENTRATE ON THIS THEN IT WOULD APPLY THAT DEVORE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO KILL THEM IF THEY AREN'T THERE.)

9) Start a Facebook, Twitter, or Petfinder account that is solely for posting Devore Animals in need-There are a few groups but they cannot cover ALL the pets in need! (IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU WORK WITH THE SHELTER ON ANYTHING LIKE THIS, OTHERWISE YOU ARE SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR FAILURE.)

10) Continue following groups that are doing their best to reform Devore and save the animals in it - you never know when they may call out for help, and you can help! (CONTINUE TO DEMAND RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACTIONS OF THE ACTIVISTS IN THEIR ROLE OF TRYING TO REDUCE ADOPTIONS AT THE DEVORE SHELTER. THIS IS DONE VIA UNFOUNDED ACCUSATIONS, DEMONSTRATIONS, AND WASTING VALUABLE COUNTY TIME WITH PUBLIC RECORDS, ETC. HOW MANY INVESTIGATIONS DO YOU NEED TO SHOW THAT DEVORE IS FAR FROM THE HELL HOLE YOU ARE TRYING TO PAINT IT TO BE?)

AS USUAL THE "ACTIVISTS" GET IT WRONG AGAIN

"Is it true that the calculation for the Hayden Mandate incentivizes "killing" animals? There's been rumor that the city or county actually get more money for the amount of animals they kill?"

This question was asked on a Facebook page by a group of misguided activists this morning. Now anyone who knows the Hayden already knows that the mandate attached to the Hayden most certainly does pay for shelters to euthanize.

Not even to mention that studies show that the Hayden has not done what it was supposed to do, it did not increase adoptions, nothing. All it really accomplished was more suffering.

And this same group is once again bringing up the blanket issue. Have these people ever been around dogs? Giving a blanket to a dog is asking for trouble, particularly in a shelter kennel. These people don't realize that a blanket can put a dog in jeopardy unless you are able to supervise the dog with the blanket. Keep in mind that many of the dogs in the shelter have never seen a blanket, they don't know that the only thing you do with a blanket is lie on it. It's there to chew, shred, and eat.

Check out shelters with heated floors and see if the dogs are lying on the blankets. They won't be.

Plus the story being told by these activists is not quite the truth. The woman with the blankets became belligerent at Devore, she made the decision to not leave blankets. I say they should have called the police on her but Devore isn't that way. Now I suggest to these activists that they get their stories straight, this blog is making them look foolish with their continuing made up stories.

Face it, in a shelter situation, these blankets are more for people, not the dogs. Take a blanket and lie on a concrete floor, does it offer much comfort? NO. This is strictly an issue of making the activists feel good, has nothing to do with making the dogs feel good. If the activists want to do that, then they need to do their job of getting the dogs out of Devore. If they would do their job instead of running their mouths, Devore might even become "no kill".

OLDIES BUT GOODIES - DO YOU REMEMBER?

This one took place at Rancho Cucamonga when the County was in charge. Remember that Rancho, under the County, had an 86% return to owner/adoption rate for dogs. I do remember this little one, she was well loved by the Staff.

PRINCESS

A woman taking a walk in a local park found a puppy. She proceeded t o t h e R a n c h o
Cucamonga Animal Shelter with the little dog and gave her to the first Animal Control Officer she saw. The dog weighed about 9 ounces at the time and was approximately 2 months old. She was stiff, blue in color, and hardly breathing. She was held in a blanket by a shelter County staff member for 4 1/2 hours until she regained her body warmth. She then began to have seizures. The staff took her to a local vet where she was diagnosed with low blood sugar and exposure to the elements.

With medical treatment from the vet, a little honey water, and a lot of love she was eating puppy food within 24 hours of being delivered to the shelter. This little dog or “The Rat” as she was nick named, was a brown/white Tea Cup Chihuahua. She was spayed and licensed and became a shelter pet who was cared for by the shelter staff on a daily basis. Oftentimes, she traveled with the Special Projects Animal Control Officer to local schools to help educate students about proper pet care and how animal shelter workers assist the homeless animals that are unwanted by society. Her story was shared with the students who loved to pet her and she in return loved the attention.

TROUBLE

Trouble was a c h o c o l a t e L a b r a d o r /Weimaraner mix who was born in 2004. He was taken to t h e D e v o r e Animal Shelter when he was only 10 days old. He was released by his owner to be euthanized because of a defect to his left leg and foot. The owners did not want him with the rest of the litter because they were afraid potential adopters would think all of their puppies had genetic defects. The shelter supervisor spoke with the owners and they agreed to allow the shelter to bottle feed and wean Trouble so that he could become a part of the Animal Care & Control (ACC) family. Trouble had a microchip implanted at ACC’s 4th annual Be Kind to Animals Week Car Show & Carnival in May of 2004, he was neutered, began obedience training classes. Trouble liked to spend his days greeting shelter visitors and has been since adopted.

Anyone else remember these dogs? If so, make a comment.

THIS BLOG IS FRIGHTENING BECAUSE IT SPEAKS THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH DOES SCARE SOME

Yes, I read this morning where this blog is "frightening". One has to ask why would it be.

Maybe it is because it puts a different twist on the antics of the "activists" actions. It would be frightening to someone to realize that their actions are actually producing the opposite results of what they want. Such as the condemnations and unproven accusations causing the public to turn away from Devore. People aren't going to take their families to a place where they expect to see cruelty. So this means fewer adoptions by the public and more euthanasia. Now this is frightening to me and this is what the "activists" are doing to Devore.

This blog also speaks of being bitter. Who wouldn't be bitter when this happening? We aren't talking potholes here, we are talking lives. And those lives are in jeopardy when dirty laundry is aired in public. Yes, I am bitter toward those who can't grasp their roles in animals having to die in shelters.

And as stated from the beginning, this blog is not the brainchild of anyone connected to SBACC or the County or any governmental agency. This blog was started to put the truth out there instead of unfounded accusations that are causing animals to die. And I can well see why that could be considered frightening to those with personal agendas.

Compliment Devore for the many improvements they have made and the public will come. Paint a horrid picture and they will stay away, what is so difficult to understand about that?

NOW THIS IS A BAD MANAGEMENT AND SHELTERS, TAKE A LESSON

Once again Phyllis Daugherty has hit the nail on the head with her stunning articles on "No Kill". http://devoreshelterfriends.blogspot.com/2012/02/push-to-make-shelters-including-devore.html

This article is about the LA City shelters and the scheme of Brenda Barnette and the Mayor to destroy LA Animal Services. How does this help the animals, more are dying? This is the example of how "No Kill" doesn't care, it is a private agenda, each one personalized by the particular follower. It is distorted and it is harming shelters, their employees, and certainly the animals that end up there.

This is a long and complicated read, Hollywood wishes they could come up with this story.

A SATIRE OF A RADIO INTERVIEW OR DOES ANYONE LISTEN TO AM ANYMORE?

Hi there folks, this is Waskely Erime and this is my show. Today we have as guests a bunch of self proclaimed Saviors of a local shelter. Are they the Saviors they think themselves to be, along with myself of course, or evil, vile people who are causing even more problems for the animals of this shelter? You can decide after hearing this one sided interview.

WE: Here is ChristianSaveThemAll, an outspoken critic of this shelter. Tell us, CSTA, I have heard many accusations but can you show me some proof of these accusations while we are in the studio today? You really don't need to, I believe every word you say because you have pimped Nathan Winograd's book, but I do need to pass along something to my listeners.

CHRISTIANSAVETHEMALL: We don't need proof, Waskely, we can be taken at our word.
Just because there have been numerous investigations, TV reporters showing unexpectedly, Grand Jury investigations, and nothing has been proven doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It is beyond me why they don't just make charges against Devore based strictly upon what we say.

WE: I hear also that you are critical of LA County animal control as well. But no mention of LA City animal services. Why is that, aren't they both the pits, no pun intended?

CHRISTAINSAVETHEMALL: Oh no, we can't talk about LA City, that is too connected with our Messiah, Nathan Winograd. Brenda Barnette is one of his chosen.

WE: How about Orange County, you have a beef with them as well?

CHRISTAINSAVETHEMALL: Of course. There was a dog with two broken legs and Orange County animal control wouldn't spend all that taxpayer money to save this dog. I would gladly give my tax dollars to save a dog, rather than give it to help at risk kids or the elderly.

WE: If you saw animal control wasn't going to save the dog, why didn't you?

CHRISTIANSAVETHEMALL: I'll put forth the excuse given by the rescuer of Zephyr from the Carson Shelter, my vet was closed.

Also, Waskely, I want to remind your listeners that I am soliciting donations via any media I can. Please visit my facebook page and I will be putting up even more facebook pages so it will be easy to donate, donate, donate. Even though Devore gives rescues pets free of charge, I still have those expenses like rhinestone collars to make them look cute. I cherry pick the best of the lot so I don't have too much in the way of expenses, note how probably 99% of my dogs for adoption are cute, small, cuddly, not the hardcore cases that definitely will be euthanized. This is CHRISTIANSAVETHEMALL and saving animals is what I claim to do.

WE: One more question, CSTA, I see that you have almost 1700 followers on your Facebook page. Now if each of them, who are running around the internet degrading Devore, would to take a shelter animal or two each month or two, then Devore would have no pets to euthanize. You can't organize that kind of effort?

CHRISTIANSAVETHEMALL: Then what would we have to complain about?

There you have it, people, take these activists at their word. They don't need proof, all they need to do is tell you to read Redemption by Nathan Winograd and it will answer all questions for you. As for me, well, I will be able to sell yet another podcast and put money in my pocket from these tabloid activists wanting to hear themselves over and over. The truth is out there, but it doesn't sell my books or my radio shows so keep looking for it elsewhere. Signing off until I find another gullible group.

DEVORE SHELTER PRACTICES THAT EXCEED CALIFORNIA MINIMUM STANDARDS

Holding Period for Stray Dogs/Cats: Pursuant to San Bernardino County Code section 32.0108, the County of San Bernardino holds stray animals a total of ninety-six (96) hours, with limited exception, when State Law only requires stray animals to be held seventy-two (72) hours. This stated practice exceeds the State of California’s minimum holding period by 33 % or twenty-four (24) additional hours.

The County continues to maintain a seven-day per week operation at the Devore Animal Shelter (DAS).

The County of San Bernardino continues to fund an award winning spay/neuter voucher program, where residents can obtain vouchers to assist in the spaying/neutering of their dogs and cats. Vouchers are redeemable at enrolled veterinary clinics and are valued at $25.00 to assist with cat sterilizations and $50.00 to assist with dog sterilizations. The County received a National Association of Counties (NACO) award for this program in 2003 and continues to fund the program at an annual cost of $180,000.00.

Devore Animal Shelter Facility Improvements: The County has completed several improvements to the Devore Animal Shelter (DAS) facility within the last several years and the below list includes select improvements which have been made and additional improvements scheduled for this year to DAS facilities: Constructed a new forty (40) run kennel building to expand capacity. Enhanced security at the facility to include 8’ chain link fencing and electronic video security system. Enhanced grooming room and purchased new pet grooming equipment and wash tub.
Purchased a separate concrete building to perform medical procedures including euthanasia for animals. Upgraded kennel gates in kennel buildings by installing galvanized steel plates at the lower portion of the kennel gates to enhance animal safety.
Replaced heating/air-condition systems in the main administrative building. Replaced all flooring and painted the interior of the main administrative building. Upgraded ventilation systems in each kennel building to include enhanced ventilation systems and mister systems in each of the kennel buildings.
Purchased new cat cages and cat resting boxes for the cat rooms and established a new isolation/treatment room.
Designed and built an exterior get-acquainted area with separate dog visitation areas for prospective adopters to interact with pets prior to adoption.
Replaced hot water heating unit in new kennel building for sub-floor kennel heating.
Installed a back-up generator to this facility to provide power in emergencies or when electricity could otherwise be unavailable.
Purchasing a new commercial dish washer to clean and disinfect animal bowls.
Pave, add lighting and a new three rail fence to Shelter Way, the main entrance road to the Shelter facility.
Install two (2) new illuminated monument signs at the entrance to Shelter Way.
Enhance livestock area and replace livestock corrals and automatic water devices.
Replace all doors and door hardware in the administration building.
Replace hot water heaters in each of the kennel buildings and upgrade electric sub-floor heating in select kennel buildings.Purchased ninety (90) new pet resting platforms. One (1) for each kennel.

Previous facility upgrades have cost approximately $3 million dollars and facility improvements scheduled for FY 2011-12 are budgeted at $360,000

Animal Adoptions / Off Site Adoption Events: One (1) of the performance measures for the Health Education Section of Animal Care and Control is to conduct four (4) off-site adoption events every month. The County has secured funds from private sources, to pay for the sterilization fees for pets adopted during the off-site adoption event(s). This significantly reduces the cost for an adopting party to adopt a pet. As a result of this effort and other efforts including enhanced partnerships with non-profit rescue organizations, the County has experienced an increase in pet adoptions over the past three (3) years. The following lists total dog/cat adoptions for County operated animal shelters in the reflected calendar years:
Calendar Year: 2007 2008 (% increase) 2009 (% increase) 2010 (% increase)
Total Dogs/Cats Adopted: 2,689 2,910 (8.2%) 4,371 (50%) 4,550 (4%)

Devore Animal Shelter – Veterinary Care Enhancements: The County of San Bernardino has enhanced the manner in which pets receive veterinary care and treatments at our Devore Animal Shelter. The County established the classification of Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in 2006 and hired an RVT to staff the Devore Animal Shelter. At the same time, the County submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) to hire a veterinarian to provide care and treatment to animals housed at the DAS. The RFP calls for the veterinarian to examine animals at the Devore Animal Shelter three (3)
days per week; provide required care and treatment to animals at the DAS facility and also provide urgent care and treatment to animals on behalf of the County at the veterinarian’s animal hospital. The selected veterinarian is Dr. Gregory Rex, who is the proprietor of the Animal Medical Hospital II. Dr. Rex has been the primary DAS veterinarian since 2007 and his contract was recently renewed for a three (3) year term in the amount of $360,000.00. Dr. Rex has a regular rotation of Monday, Wednesday and Friday in which he physically examines animals at the DAS facility, instructs and
provides guidance to the RVT regarding general care and treatment for animals, and provides staff training pertaining to disease recognition and control at this facility. Dr. Rex’s contract is a public record and available upon request. In addition, the County has established service agreements with an additional fifteen (15) veterinarians who provide emergency medical services to animals on behalf of the County or provide species specific veterinary care to large and exotic animals.

Establishment of the Animals aRe First Fund (ARFF): The County of San Bernardino formed and established the Animals aRe First Fund (ARFF) as a non-profit, charitable organization, recognized under Internal Revenue Service Code section 501 (C) (3) as a tax-exempt charity to support the San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control Division. ARFF participates in the County’s Combined Giving Program in which 371 County employees have elected to make personal contributions each pay period to support the charitable efforts of ARFF. ARFF is the non-profit charity that pays
for the sterilization fees of each pet adopted during the County’s off site adoption events and ARFF recently contributed $40,000.00 to the County of San Bernardino to fund a specialized Pit Bull spay/neuter program ($15,000) and to support making additional facility improvements to the DAS ($25,000). In FY 2011-12, ARFF has provided funding to purchase bordetella vaccine for each canine admitted to the County’s animal shelters and another donor is funding a “free” microchip program in which individuals reclaiming their pet or adopting a new pet can receive a “free” micro-chip.

Support of Non-Profit, 501 (C) (3) Rescue Group Partners: The County of San Bernardino has established a process in which non-profit, charitable, 501 (C) (3) animal rescue organizations can accept and/or adopt animals at no charge to the enrolled rescue organization. While other animal control agencies may charge adoption or “pull fees” to the non-profit rescue groups, we have elected to waive fees for approved rescue organizations. The County requires that the rescue organizations provide written confirm that the animals the rescue group has received are spayed or neutered.
Currently the County has ninety-three (93) approved and enrolled rescue organizations.

Comparable Statistics: When you compare the total number of animal admissions for all animal shelters located within the County of San Bernardino to the County of Riverside, you will note the animal admission and euthanasia statistics for both counties are comparable. Please understand, the County of San Bernardino is approximately three (3) times the size of the County of Riverside geographically and encompasses a land mass of over 20,000 square miles and is the largest County in the continental United States. Riverside County encompasses an area of approximately 7,200 square miles. Both Counties have similar human populations

Animal Admission and Disposition Review (fiscal year basis): The following chart demonstrates that animal adoptions and live releases have increased significantly from fiscal year 2009-10 to 2010-11 for the three (3) animal shelter facilities owned or operated by the County of San Bernardino. Live animal releases have increased by 28.1%(from 5,561 in FY 2009-10 to 7,124 in FY 2010-11); while animal euthanasia has been reduced by 10.2% (from 11,366 FY 2009-10 to 10,201 FY 2010-11) for dogs and cats exclusively. The percentage of live releases for dogs and cats (7,124) in FY 2010-11, when compared to total admission (17,924) is 39.7%. Total euthanasia percentage is 56.9% for FY 2010-11 with other outcomes reflected at 3.4%

BUDDY, PRETTY GIRL AND COMMUNITY SAFETY. WHICH SHOULD BE THE PRIORITY OF DEVORE?

Does anyone remember "Buddy"?

The following are two (2) blogs that have been established to track the progress of a feral dog known as Buddy. This is the dog “rescued” for a member of the District Attorney’s Office who found the feral dog and was feeding it. The Humane Society of SB Valley caught the dog and delivered it to the Devore Animal Shelter. There were three people involved in this "rescue", one rescuer who has been accused of hoarding, one "rescuer" with the DA’s Office and one with the Sheriff’s Dept., contacted a trainer with Cesar Millan to help the dog.

So far, the dog has bitten the trainer, put puncture holes in the back of the "rescuer’s car when she was transporting the dog to the vet, and has required over $2,600 in veterinary care. The dog is still feral and even the "rescuer" has stated via the trainer’s website posting that she is rethinking this rescue.

Since the trainer who works with Cesar has posted factual information and not the negative information the "rescuer" was seeking, The "rescuer" decided to establish her own blog to paint a negative impression of this dogs “rescue”.

The blog established by the trainer is located at: www.CreateBalanceWithAtTheEndofYourLeash.blogspot.com

The negative blog established is located at: http://www.saving88.blogspot.com/

Here are some nice words from the trainer about how cooperative Greg Beck was. This dog received special treatment from SBACC and it did cost taxpayers. Because SBACC felt the dog was a threat, they had to transport the dog to the trainer rather than take a chance of the dog getting loose from the "rescuer". I applaud SBACC for thinking of the community first.

Second, I am so grateful that I did not have to try and get this dog in my car, or anyone else’s, as he would have bled and oozed, and peed every where! Yuck! What a mess and what a struggle that would have been! I am so grateful that was in their truck and not mine! Lesson: No matter how bad things look or seem, that is just what you are seeing on the surface. I am truly grateful that Greg Beck was able to hand deliver with the Officer, this dog to me in their own truck! The snare pole it is. This was my first experience actually using one. I have seen them, I have held them, I have played just a bit with them, but I have never actually put one on a dog and hauled his frightened and fighting self out of a truck. The Officer was kind enough to give me a lesson, and awesome enough to assist me on my first try! Thank you! Goodness, I wish I could remember her name.

So here he comes, fighting, biting, kicking and bleeding out of the truck. Alligator rolls, and all. Ok, so we can’t get Buddy to walk on his own, and I can’t blame him. There is no doubt he was under quite a bit of stress to say the least, but we had to get him out of that truck eventually, and into my kennel run. A little pull, a little waiting, a little fighting, a little dragging (as safe as one can be) we finally get him back into my kennel run which is directly under my kitchen window and just a few feet out of my back door.

See the description of this dog? These "rescuers" could not understand why Devore would hesitate to give this dog to two women who have absolutely no experience in handling dogs like this. But Devore was condemned for not doing it, for not taking the chance of Buddy escaping into the community once again.

Note how the negative blog just ends suddenly. If Buddy turned out to be a success story you can rest assured that it would be posted and cross posted, criticizing Devore every step of the way. The last I heard was that Buddy was a jumper, that explains him being a stray, and it probably explains why no success story is showing. Now that leads me to this story coming out of Devore this weekend.

Any problems with Devore and specifically Doug, please let me know, privately. There are CA attorneys willing to help stop any retaliatory or unreasonable actions by Devore towards the animals whose care is entrusted to them AND to any rescue group trying to save one. I dealt with Doug and all the details of getting Pretty Girl out of there all last week. She would be dead if I were not lucky enough to know the right people in CA, including legal counsel, who made it happen. Apparently, the "one year old Pit Bull" (vicious dog) is a 5-7 month old PUP and not visibly PB but rather Whippet, Greyhound build - maybe Lab. Dalmatian mix. Just because the owner paid for the quarantine after the pup bit a kid and the owner paid for killing it, doesn't mean Doug had to do so - obviously. She's out, safe, and VERY afraid. For good reason, it turns out! Time for a changeover of staff at Devore. If you have a bona-fide, valid, complaint against Devore, OR any problems with Devore animals as of right now, let me know. We'll make sure no further animals die just because Devore decision makers can kill them!

This dog attacked a 7 year old girl as she was riding her scooter on the sidewalk. The owner requested euthanasia following the quarantine period. Instead, the Hayden was pulled and this dog was released to a "rescue", a "rescue" that is not an authorized rescue for Devore.

Does this not show the problems of the Hayden? When a shelter is forced to deal with rescues they haven't checked out? Here is the official response to this release. Keep in mind that animal control/shelters have as a first priority to protect the public's health and safety. They are criticized for doing so when they should be applauded. This is blurring the line once again between rescue and sheltering.

This is the dog which was involved in a dog attack which occurred in the City of Yucaipa. The victim of this attack was a seven (7) year old girl who was riding her scooter, when a dog described as Pit Bull lunged at her and bit her on the arm.

Various individuals involved in animal rescue activities have expressed an interest in receiving this Pit Bull in an attempt to “rehabilitate” the animal. The County of San Bernardino has a responsibility to the people it serves to ensure vicious and/or potentially aggressive dogs are not placed back into the community. California State law does not require the County of San Bernardino to release known vicious or aggressive owner surrendered animals to other entities. State law may require dangerous, vicious, or aggressive stray animals to be released to qualified animal rescue groups, but the law does not require the County to release aggressive owner-surrendered animals to other parties.

Specifically, California Food and Agriculture Code Section 31108.5 (b) states, “Upon relinquishment, the dog may be made available for immediate euthanasia if it has a history of vicious or dangerous behavior documented by the agency charged with enforcing state and local animal laws.” The Animal Care and Control Division has agreed to consider releasing this animal to a qualified non-profit animal rescue organization if the rescue organization agrees to assume all liability associated with the acceptance of this animal. The organization will also need to ensure that the animal be assessed and evaluated by a trained animal behaviorist prior to adopting or placing the animal with another party.

If you are aware of a qualified animal rescue organization that has an interest in receiving this animal and assuming full responsibility and liability for the animal, please feel free to forward that organization’s contact information to me and we will contact the organization and make them aware of the process to be considered for possible release of the animal.

DELUSIONAL RANTINGS BY NO KILL ABOUT DEVORE

I found this posted on a Facebook page.

We went to Devore on Wednesday and we discovered that the isolation area was in the process of having the heating system repaired/replaced. The older kennels have overhead heat while only the newer ones have floor heat. We happened to notice Brian Cronin, Division Chief of Animal Control, was there conducting a tour and "explaining" things to these individuals. It would appear that this frostbite incident as horrifying as it is, has brought about the much needed attention and at least a small change. (WHAT?? ARE YOU TRYING TO TAKE CREDIT FOR WHAT IS STANDARD PROCEDURE? TOURS ARE CONDUCTED ALL THE TIME AT DEVORE, DOESN'T MEAN IT HAD ANYTHING TO DO YOUR ACCUSATIONS.)

While we still are not able to get them to give the animals blankets, sweaters or toys, I was told they will let us provide beds if they can be hosed off to clean. The few they have are plastic with a grate that I believe was meant to have a cushion on it. They will take plastic wading pools for the mommas and pups. (WHY DO YOU WANT TO TAKE WHAT LITTLE TIME THE STAFF HAS FOR THE ANIMALS FOR THIS NONSENSE?)

I was able to have a conversation with one of the animal control officers. We discussed returning animals to their owners rather than bringing them to the shelter. While this officer agreed and he did go on to explain how he tries to work with owners, getting them to I.D. their pets as well as how to better and/or more safely confine their animals. He felt that owners think of their pets as property. He based his opinion on the fact that owners were turning over their family pets that some had owned for years rather than pay the $100+ fines (AC officers carry portable ATM machines). I asked him if he had given thought that perhaps, with the income level in the area he was speaking of and the current economy, it was very possible a choice between paying rent, feeding their family or paying the fine. He did seem like he genuinely wants to work with the community but did just stare at me when I suggested returning animals for free and working with the owners to better secure their pets. (AT LEAST HE DIDN'T LAUGH IN YOUR FACE LIKE I WOULD HAVE, JUST WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD PAY FOR THIS, NATHAN WINOGRAD MAYBE? WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME WINOGRAD GAVE ANY MONEY TOWARD A SHELTER TO HELP IT. FOR THAT MATTER, WHEN HAS ANY NO KILL OUTFIT GIVEN ANY MONEY TO HELP ANYTHING?) I then brought up the much needed free and more low cost spay and neuter being available. He did not think the people in this area will utilize it. (THE COUNTY OF SAN BERNARDINO HAS A NATIONAL AWARD WINNING SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM THAT HAS NOT SEEN A SINGLE BUDGET CUT SINCE INCEPTION.) I described a situation I witnessed in Washoe County in an area that was difficult in getting owners to spay and neuter and confine their pets. I explained that they set up a free clinic for shots and spay/neuter in the community. They also gave out information and answered questions. There was such a turn out that they worked past the expected time and still had to turn people away and schedule another clinic. (AND DID YOU HAPPEN TO NOTICE THE SEVERE OVERCROWDING, DISEASE, SICK ANIMALS IN YOUR HAPPY LITTLE MAKE BELIEVE WORLD OF NO KILL? MITCH WAS FORCED INTO EARLY RETIREMENT, NOT GETTING ALL THOSE GOOD BENEFITS NOW FROM THE COUNTY. AND WITH THAT RETIREMENT COMES THE OPENING FOR THE TRUTH ABOUT WASHOE TO COME OUT. HAVEN'T YOU NOTICED HOW WINOGRAD IS IGNORING MITCH THESE DAYS?) I noticed that the people in this community started becoming more involved with their pets as a direct result of these clinics. Before, the animals didn't "belong" to anyone( in case AC showed up) and now they took pride in their ownership. (WANNA MENTION THE HOARDERS THAT HAVE BEEN CAUGHT AND THEY WERE GETTING THEIR CATS FROM THE NEVADA HUMANE SOCIETY?)

I believe (and hope) that the AC officer left with a better perspective in regards to working with the community and maybe more pets will get returned to their owners. (OH THE MESSIAH COMPLEX IS ALIVE AND WELL!!)

Another issue that is a big problem, is the lack of knowing what to do if your pet is missing. By the time people find out where to look, it is sadly found that their pet has been KILLED or they cannot come up with the "bail" to get their pet out before they are KILLED. Many of the animals that end up at Devore have loving homes. The KILL rate would drop dramatically if all the animals with homes were simply returned to their owners. (IF AN OWNER HASN'T FOUND THEIR PET WITH ALL THE AVAILABLE RESOURCES TO DO SO, THEN IT IS BECAUSE THAT OWNER AIN'T LOOKING, AND DEVORE IS ON PETHARBOR. ACO'S IN THE FIELD CERTAINLY DO TRY TO RETURN ANY PET THAT HAS A WAY TO IDENTIFY THEIR HOME. THIS IS CONFIRMED IN THE SERVICE CALL LOGS THAT I PERSONALLY CHECK. DO YOU?)

San Bernardino County has a fair amount of low income residents, high unemployment, a huge amount of foreclosed homes and closed up businesses. In addition, there are residents that come from different cultural backgrounds and may speak little or no English. This is a County that needs to be more understanding of their residents and their current financial situation and find ways to work with pet owners. (AND HOW DO YOU PROPOSE TO PAY FOR THIS? YOU ARE DEMANDING SO MANY THINGS FROM DEVORE THAT TAKE MONEY, ARE YOU GOING TO START A CHIP IN FUND FOR DEVORE TO DELIVER THESE PROPOSALS YOU MAKE?)

These people think there is a money tree that a shelter can just pick the money and do whatever they want the shelter to do. They don't live in the real world, that or they are completely unmedicated delusional.

WORDS THAT RING OH SO TRUE WITH SHELTER REFORM

A few years ago I was privvy to having a private conversation with Guerdon Stuckey, the head of Los Angeles City Animal Services, just a few days before he was fired. He told me of something and thus this post.

Stuckey was actually a very good director for LA. He was not an animal person, he was a manager. I was very impressed with his observations and solutions that day. And highly disappointed that others couldn't see how his skills could help LA. Shame. To get to the story, Stuckey spent over $10,000 on two dogs thinking that the activists would be happy to see such. He wondered what it would take to satisfy these activists who were complaining about the lack of medical for the shelter animals. He told me that they never said a word, no thanks, nothing. Didn't even acknowledge this act. In fact, he said when he presented this to them, they ignored it and presented him with more demands. I would think they would have been all over it, jumping for joy, proclaiming that LA was on the way to "No Kill" with a director who cares enough to spend that much of the taxpayer's money on these dogs.

Nope didn't happen. So when I saw this online, it so reminded me of what Stuckey had told me that day. No matter what you do, these anti-Devore activists will never be satisfied.

"When the correspondent asked Litvinov, “Suppose the West would suddenly give in and grant all Moscow’s demands? . . . would that lead to goodwill and the easing of the present tension?” Litvinov answered, “It would lead to the West being faced, after a more or less short time, with the next series of demands.”"

And here is an article from 1952 about it:

THE PUSH TO MAKE SHELTERS, INCLUDING DEVORE, NO KILL

The anti-Devore activists have yelled about making Devore a "No Kill" shelter. Otherwise this blog is not dedicated to that issue in particular, but rather to how this issue affects Devore. This issue has affected Devore and will continue to affect Devore until the truth is exposed. That has happened.

There is a series of articles exposing this movement that is doing more harm than good. Let me explain to those who may not understand why anyone would be against "No Kill". First there is no kill, what all rescuers, animal welfare, pet welfare advocates work for every day in their own ways. We want to see the end of euthanasia because of time and space in our shelters. "No Kill", note the use of small verses large letters) is a personal agenda of a man claiming to be an expert but who has only handled less than 10,000 shelter animals in his entire sheltering experience. These articles will point to this misrepresentation and many others by this this movement. Expect an update because there will be two more installments.

This information plus "No Kill" supporting the hideous Hayden Bill that tells shelters they can euthanize puppies and kittens under 8 weeks old, because they are considered unadoptable. Do these anti-Devore activists complain about any euthanization of these kittens and puppies? You bet they do, but at the same time they are signing petitions to KEEP the Hayden. Can anyone say hypocrite? If they want to keep the Hayden, then they want the taxpayer to pay shelters to euthanize, yes you hear that right. The Hayden mandate is to pay shelters to euthanize, not to adopt or do better, but to euthanize. These anti-Devore activists actually support the payments to shelters to kill. Can anyone figure this out? If you do, please explain in a comment.

BLAMING DEVORE WHEN THE DOG IS IN RIVERSIDE

I caught this on one of the anti-Devore sites. The question is will these "activists" hit Riverside now? They wanted it to be in Devore so badly so they could spew their propaganda about it.

"I'M ASKING ALL OF YOU TO PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TODAY TO DOUG SMITH (dsmith@dph.sbcounty.gov) AND KELLY PAPP (kpapp@dph.sbcounty.gov). THEY ARE THE SUPERVISORS AT DEVORE. WHAT IS IMPORTANT HERE IS THAT THE OWNER SURRENDERED THE DOG TO DEVORE DUE TO DOG BITING SOMEONE. HE ASKED THAT DEVORE KILL THE DOG WHEN IT IS OUT OF QUARANTINE. THAT QUARANTINE DATE IS FEB. 10TH (FRI.) AND DOUG SMITH HAS ALREADY MADE AN EDICT THAT THE DOG CAN'T BE SENT TO RESCUE. IT IS NOW UP TO US TO SPEAK UP FOR THE DOG TO PLEAD THAT THE DOG BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO BE RESCUED. I'LL EVEN START OUT BY OFFERING A $15 PLEDGE AND WILL TRACK PLEDGES. DOUG IS A TOUGH COOKIE BUT IF THERE IS ENOUGH PRESSURE PUT ON HIM, PERHAPS HE'LL BUCKLE. SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE PLEASANT RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIM SO IF YOU DO, PLEASE TALK TO HIM FIRMLY AND FOR ALL THE REST THAT DON'T HAVE A RELATIONSHIP LET'S GET OUR POINT ACROSS THAT THIS DOG WAS STARVED AS A RESULT OF OWNER PUNISHING HIM. WE HAVE TO MAKE PHONE CALLS AS WELL AND BARRAGE THEM WITH ASKING FOR JUSTICE FOR THIS DOG. THE DOG IS A PITTIE FEMALE. SEE DESCRIPTION BELOW WITH ID NO. DEVORE PHONE NO. IS AT THE BOTTOM SO SCROLL DOWN. Reva Smilkstein"

COMMENTS:
i don't belive it for ONE second... look at the dog's injuries: this would suggest extensive ABUSE and they should investigate THAT!!! look at her muzzle, it appears bruised, and again this would suggest ABUSE. I would question the 'proof' this despicable owner provided about the supposed bite. and even IF the dog went after someone, CAN YOU BALME HER? look at the abuse she clearly suffered! HELLO?!?!?!? my gut feeling is the 'bite story' might just be fabricated, so no one presses charges for abuse (a felony is the state of CA). SO DOES THAT MEAN YOU WILL GO AFTER RIVERSIDE?

I just commented under the picture too but I'll post her in hopes a rescue sees this. I just emailed Doug smith and got an almost immediate response saying he will consider releasing her to a rescue if they are willing to assume all liability. They need to forward the rescue organizations information and he will start the process of releasing her. Any rescues willing to take this poor girl?! EMAILED THE WRONG PERSON AND DOESN'T EVEN REALIZE IT.

This dog is at Coachella, not Devore...The one you guys are emailing Doug about is Pretty Baby a black/white pit who attacked a girl. This one above is Charly from Coachella who attacked another dog FINALLY SOMEONE REALIZED THEIR MISTAKE.

Now realize that these people are talking about dogs that have attacked someone. The "Savior" complex is alive and well in these Devore "activists". They want to save them no matter the cost of human suffering or death.

SAVING SHELTER ANIMALS FROM "NO KILL" RESCUES

The facts are in and it is showing an increase in hoarding and cruelty cases from "No Kill" rescues. Keep in mind that the "activists" coming after Devore are of the "No Kill" mentality. Already these "activists" have pulled dogs and left them to die in a kennel. Those dogs had to be rescued. http://devoreshelterfriends.blogspot.com/2012/01/not-happy-ending-for-devore-dogs-thanks.html

Of greater significance are the numbers of animals rescued from hoarders who actually purport to be operating no-kill shelters. There was some improvement on that front in 2011, but those cases shouldn't exist at all:

From ANIMAL PEOPLE, November/December 2010: [EXCERPT] The numbers of dogs and cats taken in from failed animal shelters and nonprofit shelterless rescues in 2010 appear likely to exceed the numbers impounded from breeders for the first time in the 19 years that ANIMAL PEOPLE has kept track. About 4,600 dogs and cats had been taken in from failed shelters and rescues as of Thanksgiving 2010, almost the same as the then-record number taken in from failed shelters and rescues in the whole of 2009. The 2010 figure projects to a total of nearly 5,000 for the year, or 25% of the total number of dogs and cats impounded in neglect cases.

From ANIMAL PEOPLE, January/February 2012:

Puppy millers move from malls to web sites [EXCERPT] Impoundments of dogs and cats from failed shelters and rescues rose from 2,159 in 2005 to nearly 5,000 in 2010, exceeding the number impounded from puppy mills for the first time, but dropped back to 3,165 in 2011.
