DEVORE'S YEAR OF 2012

San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control/Devore increased their dog and cat adoption rate by 10% for the year of 2012. That translates into the County of San Bernardino operated animal shelters have one of the highest pet placement/live release rate of 64% compared to other shelters in the region. It also translates into Devore having one of the lowest euthanasia rate of the other shelters in the region. Adoptions are up and euthanasia is at the all time low.

Devore/SBACC participated in the Rachael Ray $100,000 challenge and came in 8th in the nation in voting. SBACC came onto the social media with a new facebook page. Adoptions efforts and campaigns are now broadcast to the Spanish speaking community via Telemundo 52.

Devore has qualified for and will be participating in the Rachael Ray $100K Challenge again in 2013. SBCAA received rave reviews for the Mega Adoption Event that it sponsored last year where 163 pets were adopted and the plans are to do it again this year.

Devore is still holding 48 offsite adoption events in the community whereas many, if not most, shelters rarely have any. SBACC has an adoption vehicle specifically designed to carry the animals to these events with clear windows for viewing. The vehicle has also come in handy many times to evacuate animals during disasters.

And Devore is maintaining the same hours while many shelters, with the suspension of the Hayden Act, are cutting their hours. Longer hours mean more adoptions, more owner reclaims. Devore is open seven days a week and hours to accommodate the working community.

Now anyone want to challenge that Devore is making progress in spite of having the deal with the trouble deliberately created by the activists. These activists deliberately campaign to keep the phones tied up at Devore, using valuable staff time. The activists place many time consuming obstacles in the path of a shelter that is obviously trying to do the very best possible. Kudos to Devore for standing strong and continuing in spite of the hatred of these activists, the demoralizing of staff with their accusations. The Devore and County staff are so much more better people than the ones who attack the shelter and the grace, fortitude, and care of SBACC/Devore shows in the progress being made.

UPDATE: A reader reminded this blogger about the Grand Jury Report this year. A glowing report that basically calls the Devore "activists" liars. Jurors went to Devore anonymously, found a friendly staff and a clean facility. And the report was issued with NO RESPONSE REQUIRED. Oh how all the other agencies in San Bernardino would love to get that statement on their reports. It means Devore passed Grand Jury inspection with flying colors.

  1. You forgot to mention the Grand Jury Report, where the Jurors visited the shelter multiple times posing as the public, to see the shelter in action as the public see its operations. The Grand Jury visited the shelter after receiving complaints from the activists. The Grand Jury found no fault with the shelter and found a shelter the residents of San Bernardino County should be proud of.

  2. Continue to stand strong Devore!

It is your professionalism versus the unstable, irrational rantings of those who threaten, spew forth vicious, unfounded innuendos. Their lack of professionalism and their highly charged emotional statements are only showing themselves for who they are - cowards and terrorists.

  3. Congratulations to Supervisors, Devore management and staff!

You have continued to try to protect and care for animals under horrendous attacks from unreliable and untruthful sources. I, too, thank you for "standing strong" in your commitment to taking care of animals.

  4. Got it figured out now:
    .
    The no kill protocol
    .
    1. Recruit a volunteer(s) to get their foot in the door.
    .
    2. Get a volunteer to snap a picture of a dirty litter box, urine on the floor, or even better, a dog or cat who has just been euthed but not disposed of yet. If a photo of syringes or Fatal Plus can be obtained, that's even better - take several photos from different angles.
    .
    3. Post the photo(s) online - along with a sad, but angry, explaination as to what the photo depicts - twist the words around to gain the most anger. Post the photo(s) on as many NoKill Facebook pages as you can - Twitter, too. Make sure you put "STOP THE KILLING!!" somewhere close to the photo.
    .
    4. Run to the media with the photo - and the concocted story - and plead with them to get it posted PRONTO in their online and offline media print - make sure to mention that this is a matter of life and death - that more and more animals are in that dirty, awful shelter being illegally killed and time is of the essence.
    .
    5. Send all information, including the photo(s), to the city or county board - make sure you let them know that the NK animal "advocates" won't back down and they are demanding action NOW. This is where you begin demanding (not asking but DEMANDING) that the board fires the shelter Director - who, you can add, is nothing but a killing apologist who enjoys killing innocent animals.
    .
    6. Begin a solicitation campaign to other no kill groups across the nation - encouraging them to email, fax, call and write the local board to demand the firing of the shelter Director. Remind them that the no kill "advocates" aren't going to back down until action is taken NOW.
    .
    7. If there are any dissenters, smear their credibility as you come across them.
    .
    8. If the process appears to not be working, or not moving along quickly enough, plan - and heavily advertise - a sad vigil - remind people to bring lots and lots of candles - and angry signs- to be held at the shelter - to honor those inside whose innocent deaths are seconds away.
    .
    9. If the process is successful, and the board fires the Director - or they resign under pressure, immediately begin pushing for a no kill person to be placed in the position. Show them the cooked numbers that appear to portray that they, too, can be a no kill shelter overnight - if they will only let the no kill people lead them down the shelter road.
    .
    10. If the board bows down and agrees to hire the no kill person as the new Director, begin posting online on all of the no kill websites on the internet - that VICTORY (cap all letters) has been reached.
    .
    11. Begin firing the true humane workers - find a reason, shouldn't be too hard, everyone breaks a rule every now and then. Begin bringing in all of the no kill people you can find - advertise online for no kill minded people to apply.
    .
    12. Begin planning adoption drives - offer kittens and puppies for half price - but if they aren't going fast enough, go to offering them for free, just get them out the door. Call the no kill transports - and the pit bull breeders - and all dog club breed specific rescues - remind them that no kill is running the place now and changes are a'coming.
    .
    13. In the event the board won't bow down to the demands, campaign harder with more anger and threats - start showing up at their meetings, make sure to speak loudly when your turn comes - use words like "progressive" and "compassionate" and other emotion grabbing phrases.
    .
    14. If all else fails - go back to Step 1 and begin again.
    .
    :)

    1. Thanks for the link. One link on the Georgia site for the LA site reminds me of www.workingtohelpanimalstodaytomorrow.blogspot.com and what that blog has been saying for a long time about Barnette and LA.

Remember no accusations without proof. Rant if you will, it won't be published.
